Résumé of the Inaugural lecture of Prof. Dr. Hagen Pfundner

TPL Path Labs was pleased having attended the inaugural lecture of Prof. Dr. Hagen Pfundner, which took place on Thursday 6th July 2017 at 5pm c.t. in the auditorium at Albert Ludwig University, Institut für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften Hermann-Herder-Str. 7/9 in Freiburg.

Title of the lecture:

 

 „Immer länger, immer gesünder leben?

Was Arzneimittel leisten – vom Wirkstoff zum gesellschaftlichen Nutzen“ 

 

The evening was opened by Prof. Dr. Manfred Jung, Dean of the faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Freiburg.

In his welcoming speech, he presented Prof. Dr. Hagen Pfundner´s impressive vita and career.

With his inspirational lecture, Prof. Dr. Pfundner shared his knowledge with the students, scientists and, representatives from industry. The interested audience took the chance of posing questions to Prof. Dr. Pfundner, who answered professionally.

After the inaugural lecture, Prof. Dr. Pfundner invited his guests for a snack which provided the opportunity for a lively discussion with the lecturer and the participants.

The evening proved to be an outstanding success, all participants enjoyed very much.

First award for „Finding and retaining employees“ at the competition Jobmotor 2016

We are delighted to inform that TPL Path Labs is the winner of the “Jobmotor Award 2016” for small-sized regional enterprises up to 19 employees in the category: “ Finding and retaining skilled personnel” for the year 2016.  Since 2006 the publisher “Badische Zeitung” and their partners offer as a reward the “Job motor Award” TPL Path Labs out of 46 candidates proudly received April 7, 2017 during the celebratory awards ceremony in Freiburg. TPL Path Labs and his employees, their families and friends duly celebrated this award on their terrace at the 4th floor of their facility at bright sunshine, Monday, April 10, 2017. Driven by desire and ambition to be the premium service provider for pharmaceutical, device and cosmetics developer, TPL Path Labs managed to recruit highly skilled personnel supporting the upper management visions.

Retirement arrangements, free of charge English lessons at the facility, additional vacation days beyond the legal requirements, promoting and supporting the dual educational pathway and also advanced trainings contributed to tie in their employees. TPL Path Labs is now committed to discover and apply new technologies such as cell-based techniques, to support the European Medicines Agency philosophy of the 3 R (reduce, replace, refine animal experiments) having recently employed a very experienced Associate Professor from the University of Freiburg as the lead for this project. To appoint plus 100 employees within the next years is the goal after TPL Path Labs has doubled the number of employees in the last two years

In his welcoming speech he informed about the latest project Aesculap is promoting together with graduates of the University of Freiburg.

With his inspirational speech Prof. Dr. Knaebel shared his knowledge with the 200 attending scientists, members of industrial companies and students. From a historic overview to the new discoveries regarding medical technological equipment, Prof. Dr. Knaebel did not leave any topic untouched.His lecture was academic and at the same time also amusing, the former surgeon (University Heidelberg) was able to keep constant attention of the listeners.

The audience took advantage of the chance of posing questions to Prof. Dr. Knaebel.

The animated discussions and talks were effective and inspiring for all attendees and showed the success of the evening!

A smaller circle continued the discussions while changing the location. TPL Path Labs is delighted to have sponsored another prosperous event!

With a lecture hall being filled up to the last of the 200 seats, scientists, members of industrial companies and students enjoyed an eloquent yet entertaining speech of Dr Rüdiger Krech (Director Health Systems and Innovation Office of the Assistant Director-General World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva / CH)

 

After the lecture, the audience took the chance of posing questions, which were answered competently by Dr. Krech. The following lively discussions and talks were fruitful and inspiring for all participants and showed the success of the evening!

Review Eurotox meeting 2014

Prosperous meetings with very good discussions and lectures are behind us. TPL attended for the second time the Eurotox meeting 2014 from 7th to 10th September, but will be present the next time again.

TPL at Eurotox 2014 in Edinburgh

The Eurotox Meeting in Edinburgh from 7th to 10th of September is TPL ´s first congress with a sponsoring. Announcement – new colleague

TPL Path Labs is pleased to announce that Eva Smudde joined our team on April 1st, 2017 as Project Manager.

Eva Smudde studied biology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freiburg and specialized in immunology. She completed her diploma thesis at the Max-Planck-Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg about the role of the enzyme arginase for the proliferation of the parasite leishmania.

She has work experience both in academia and industry and therefore has a very broad repertoire of technical skills including molecular biology and immunology methods (DNA and RNA preparation, PCR, qPCR, plasmid cloning and analysis, sequencing, immunofluorescence, FACS, ELISA, Western Blotting) as well as wide experience in cell culture handling (primary cells and various cell lines).
In our lab she will be part of the melanoma-FISH team and furthermore supporting the development and discocery of  new technologies to be applied in the near future such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).

“I am looking forward to use my skills and experience to take part in the development of an innovative, exciting company!” stated Eva Smudde.

TPL Path Labs is delighted to announce that associate professor PD Dr. Simon Schulz (PhD) joined our team on April 1st, 2017 as Project Lead for the Medical Device Section supporting the 3R philosophy (reduce, replace, refine animal experiments) of TPL.

The Associate professor PD Dr. Simon Schulz studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, including an internship at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. He finished his PhD in Biophysics at the Max-Planck-Institute for Intelligent Materials, Stuttgart and the Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, University of Heidelberg. After that he performed his postdoctoral studies in cell research and development of new biomaterials for tissue regeneration in the department of Oral Biotechnology, University Medical Center Freiburg. In 2016, he received the venia legendi for „Experimental Medicine“ and became associate professor (PD) at the University of Freiburg.

PD Dr. Simon Schulz is a very interdisciplinary experienced researcher and lecturer at the University Medical Center Freiburg with more than 25 peer-reviewed publications.
Based on his scientific background he integrates significant expertise both in chemistry, biophysics, molecular cell biology and development of new biomaterials and their evaluation in-vitro.
His research focussed on broaden the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the physiology and pathophysiology of periodontal and other tissues in response to external stimuli, but also on translational research „from bench to bedside“ by integrating biophysical-biomechanical approaches. In these research fields, he has led many research projects.
In 2013 PD Dr. Simon Schulz established a GLP infrastructure in the Department of Oral Biotechnology, University Medical Center Freiburg, and became study director of this GLP-facility in 2014. He has extensive experience in quality assurance and GLP according to OECD principles.

Announcement – new colleague

TPL Path Labs is delighted to announce Dr. Ralf D. Hess (M.Sc., PhD) has joined TPL Path Labs effective from April 1st, 2017 as the Chief Strategy and Compliance Officer.

Dr. Hess holds a master of science and a PhD degree from the University of Freiburg, Germany. He is a dedicated and experienced consultant with particular expertise in the development of biosimilars, vaccines and medical devices and assay development as a subject matter expert in the quality and CMC (chemistry, manufacturing, control) field. He supported quality and CMC related tasks for the world`s first authorized biosimilar therapeutic monoclonal antibody (from 2007 until May 2013).

He draws on + 30 years of experience in R&D and regulatory compliance for the manufacture of drugs, devices and in laboratory analytics. Dr. Hess has particular expertise in auditing Drug Substance and Drug Product manufacturer (steriles and solid dosage) according to EUDRALEX volume 4 (EU GMP Guide Part I and II and Annexes), auditing medical device manufacturer according to ISO 13485 and also quality control laboratories according to ISO 17025 and ISO 15189, GLP and GCLP. He is an APIC ICHQ7 Biologics internationally certified auditor and an IRCA internationally certified ISO 13485 lead auditor.

He provides particular expertise in the manufacturer of in vitro diagnostic medical devices (Directive 98/79/EC) and compliance for medical device (Directive 93/42/EC) manufacture conformity assessment procedures, design development (21 CFR part 820.30), supporting FDA-clearance, CE-marking and ISO 13485/ISO 14971 provisions within the EU. He has extensive expertise in addressing unwanted Immunogenicity, development and validation of bioassays and biomarker. He was registered as 2nd Qualified Person (for a recombinant biologic) with the Swiss Medic, Basel Switzerland (2007-2012) and is an experienced postdoctoral research scientist/ virologist/immunologist /medical virologist and epidemiologist in both academia and in industry from 1987. Dr. Hess is affiliated with numerous associations and has authored + 50 peer-reviewed publications. Since 2014 he is a committee member of the  PDA (Parenteral Drug Association) workshop on monoclonal antibodies.

TPL Path Labs is pleased to announce that Dr. Daniel Schumacher joined our team on November 1st, 2016 as Project Manager.

Dr. Schumacher brings significant knowledge and experience in the areas of virology, assay validation and quality control, which he obtained in various R&D and management positions over the course of his career.

In his last position, Dr. Schumacher was head of product support at IDEXX Switzerland AG focusing on molecular biological assay development, sample management and cell bank operations, while leading international project teams.

Before his time in Switzerland, Dr. Schumacher held the position of manager of Virology and Biologics at Microtest Laboratories Inc., during his 9 year stay in the USA. In this role he was responsible for business development, compliance and departmental operations.

Dr. Schumacher studied biology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität in Greifswald, Germany and completed his Ph.D. at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut on the island of Riems, Germany.  He completed his postdoctoral studies in Virology at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, in NY, USA.

“I am pleased to join this dynamic, growing company, where I welcome the opportunity to make a positive impact on the ongoing development.” stated Dr. Schumacher.

The whole TPL team is delighted and very proud of our COO Ayse Bal: after 3 years of extra-occupational training at Donauuniversität Krems/Austria she finished her academic studies successfully as one of the best in her graduation year!

This performance is extraordinary, considering that she is doing a very tough job with an immense workload on a daily basis in our laboratory.

The degree programme focusses on clinical studies, which is our bread and butter business at TPL.

All of us would like to congratulate her on her success – we are taking pride in the fact, that, from now on, our COO is allowed to use the title of M.Sc. !

Announcement – new colleague

TPL Path Labs is delighted to publicise that Dr. Georg Kuales has joined our team as Project Manager. Since 1st of June 2016 he complements our team of scientific specialists.

Dr. Kuales´ scientific focus lies within stem cell biology. He has a particular interest in the generic regulation of mouse embryonic and trophoblast stem cells and experience with other model organisms. His expertise includes immunofluorescence (IF) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) as well as western blot, in situ hybridisation, PCR, qPCR and cell culture techniques including the isolation of primary cells.

In our team he will be the leading scientist responsible for the IHC laboratory. Dr. Kuales is going to conduct projects in matters of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and tissue cross reactivity (TCR) studies. Furthermore, his responsibilities will include supervising the process optimisation with regards to staining methods.

“I am happy to find my new scientific home with TPL Path Labs, which presents as a seminal company. This is a fantastic opportunity for me to join with my ideas and to broaden my experience. I feel, this new step in my career is crucial!” stated Dr. Kuales.

Announcement – new colleague

On 15 March 2016, TPL Path Labs welcomed Christina Metzger, PhD to the team as Project Manager.

Dr. Metzger is focused on molecular biology and biochemistry with a strong interest in immunohistochemical tools and techniques. She is specialised in establishment and validation of analytic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) as well as characterisation of antibodies. Her expertise includes cell culture techniques and further immunological- as well as immunohistochemical analysis techniques, in particular western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry.

In our lab she will establish and manage the development of a human tissue bank including paraffin embedded dermal tissue as well as fresh frozen tissue, comprising all human organs recommended for tissue cross reactivity studies. Furthermore she will also be involved in the performance of these studies in our own facility.

Christina Metzger´s comment on her new employment at TPL Path Labs: “The experience I gathered so far, including immunohistochemical analyses and set up and validation of a diagnostic test tool, made me eager to continue my scientific career at TPL Path Labs. This future-oriented company offers great and diverse challenges for my further professional career.”

Announcement – new colleague

TPL Path Labs is pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Lemarchand, DVM, PhD, DECVP will join our team from 1st April 2016 as Chief Scientific Officer. 
 
Dr. Lemarchand´s scientific focus lies within pathology, toxicology, immunology, special molecular in situ tissue techniques and biomarker research, with a strong interest in imaging and molecular biology tools. He is specialized in biomarker implementation and tissue cross reactivity techniques. His expertise includes molecular and discovery pathology as well as characterization of models ohuman diseases. He has interest in neuropathology and omics in special tissues.
 
His responsibilities in our laboratory will be – among others – assay development and validation and study pathologist and peer reviewer in GLP, non-GLP (dose ranging) and GCLP studies, in tissue cross reactivity studies of biologics and other specialty/ discovery studies.
